The Rookie is intended for young or inexperienced users, with a prominent guard to keep fingers off the blade, and a blunted tip to reduce chance of getting poked.  It's still a very sharp blade though, so it's up to you to decide if your child is ready for a knife like this.  Comes with a plastic sheath with a notch in the side to accommodate the guard.
