Kingdom Pendant, Viking Whetstone from York

90-11 X2 03

Small whetstones were often worn as pendants by many northern peoples, including Vikings. These are reproductions of whetstone pendants found in archaeological digs in York, England, but similar pendants have been found in Gotland, Norway, Kalåstad, and Birka. They have a very fine grain, and thus are suitable for final honing, not initial sharpening or restoring a dull blade. They are roughly 3.25" long, just under an inch wide at the bottom, and 0.25" thick. They come in a variety of colors, with striations of grey, red, green, and brown. They are cut from jasper, and should be used dry (no water or oil). Imported from Sweden.
